Before the boy could pepper him with further questions, they rode through the main gate of Masyaf, where the sentries were suddenly standing that much straighter now that the Mentor had returned.

Once inside, Altaïr dismounted first before lifting his son off the horse. Then it was several of his most senior men who came to him with questions, which he tried to answer as best he could without going into details. Yes they had returned safely, no things had not gone precisely as planned, but the story could wait—he wanted to speak with Malik first, and more importantly, he wanted to see his family.

This led to Altaïr, Sef and one or two hangers-on walking up the slope and toward the practice yard, which was ringed by a whole class of novices but currently contained only Rauf and one familiar, much shorter figure.
